he upcoming U.S. presidential election will significantly affect the Philippines, more than many Filipinos might realize. The outcome will shape our relationship with the United States and influence our future for decades to come. For over half a century, the Philippines has maintained a Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) with the U.S., which has historically involved sending military support to conflicts like the Korean and Vietnam wars. This treaty also guarantees that if the Philippines is attacked, the United States is obligated to assist.
In recent years, China has asserted its claim over much of the South China Sea, flouting international laws it once agreed to uphold. Its increasingly aggressive military and quasi-military fishing fleets have been harassing and intimidating our naval and fishing vessels, raising concerns about our national sovereignty.
Both U.S. presidential candidates appear to adopt a tough stance against China's overreach in the region. However, some critics argue that Donald Trump may take a more transactional approach, potentially offering concessions to China to secure a perceived "win." Such concessions could have long-lasting negative consequences for the Philippines and its citizens.
Trump has previously indicated a willingness to negotiate with adversaries, as seen in his comments about the conflict in Ukraine, where he suggested that he could end the war by making significant territorial concessions to Russia.
On the other hand, while Kamala Harris lacks a definitive track record in foreign policy, many expect her to adopt a more cautious and diplomatic approach. This could provide a more stable partnership for the Philippines, as opposed to the risk of being sidelined under Trump's impulsive leadership.
As Filipino Americans head to the polls this November, they face a critical decision. Their choice could significantly impact the future of 120 million Filipinos. The Philippines needs a reliable ally—one that genuinely supports our interests rather than prioritizing its own convenience. It is essential that Americans elect a leader who will stand by the Philippines during challenging times, not just when it serves their agenda.
